Rate of Pay: Program Assistant Level 4 ($19.71 – $25.38) plus benefits
Hours: 45 weeks, generally 8.5 hours/day, Monday through Friday with occassional evening and weekends
Reports To: Adult Basic Education Program Director

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, this position is part of the Adult Academic Program (AAP) administrative team, reports to the AAP Director, and collaborates closely with program staff and instructors to support ABE learners from recruitment through transition to college and career. This position also works with the community and staff to promote Life-Long learning for all residents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support adult learners with career and college navigator services (1:1 meetings and class presentations)
  • Regularly visit the Adult Correctional Facility (ACF) for 1:1 with learners and quarterly meetings
  • Facilitate Area Learning Center (ALC) enrollments and facilitate credit recovery
  • Liaise with district high schools for ALC and GED services
  • Serve as Adult Diploma advisor
  • Work with learners 1:1 on attendance and persistence issues
  • Use the Student Information Database (SiD) to review attendance and persistence data
  • Participate in community events and AAP outreach efforts to support/enhance partnerships, and engage potential learners.
  • Works with students and staff in a variety of Adult Academic programs including GED Classes, ELL classes, Career Pathways, and access to services.
  • Supports online and in-person classes, registration, student services, community services, workshops, and training programs.
  • Assists teachers and staff providing daily program operations; analyzes program issues and recommends solutions; assists teachers with managing classrooms, materials, and student issues.
  • Assists students in learning processes; provides individual instruction, encourages attendance, socialization and good communications.
  • Performs administrative functions, including registration and test proctoring; assists with data and reporting systems and maintaining records; student services and compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Proctors GED testing at both the Crystal Learning Center and the Hennepin County Adult Corrections Facility
  • Communicates with learners, and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality of personal information.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and RAS information.
  • Uses technology effectively to organize and deliver school programs and services.
  • Provides customer service to new and existing learners, answers questions, and explains school guidelines.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and RAS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Promotes and markets AAP; recruits new learners; participates in community outreach events such as attending district open houses and distributing flyers to local churches and businesses.
  • Participates in a variety of Community Education functions, student services, community services, special assignments, and community events.
  • Participates in developing new partnerships with colleges and community organizations to support the career and academic outcomes of AAP learners.
  • Promotes lifelong learning and participation in community programs to enhance the quality of life.
  • Works with learners on career exploration, workplace readiness skills, and post-secondary admissions process.
  • Operates the school resource room with non-academic services such as job applications, reading personal mail, finding food shelves, and other efforts to help students navigate through obstacles which can make attending class more challenging.
  • Often required to work outside normal business hours and at various locations in the community.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Adult Academics, Community Education and Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS          

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High School Diploma AND five (5) years professional experience, or the completion of 60 semester college credits (required) in an area related to position assignment; AND two (2) years of professional experience working with community engagement and data collection; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Local community resources, regional community services programs, and regional training programs.
  • Personal computers utilizing Adult Academic platforms, and specialized in word, excel and other Microsoft office applications
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Safety rules and regulations.
  • Methods and techniques for working with students and adults with disabilities and special needs.
  • Local community resources and regional community services programs.

Skill in:

  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Administering educational and school support programs.
  • Identifying problems and opportunities, and developing solutions.
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of assigned staff.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients and community agencies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.  First Aid, CPR, and AED training is required within one year of hire. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training may be required within one year of hire, based on assignment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

 Work is performed in a classroom and a general office environment, with moderate physical requirements; requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently.  Jobs in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree, long periods of working with computers, and working within the community. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
