At the December meeting, the Board adopted the following statement: "The Literacy Action Network stands by our students, colleagues, friends and volunteers who are facing oppression and/or discrimination. As an organization we denounce such behavior as at odds with our standing concern for health, safety and happiness of our diverse society. Adult basic education has a long history of fighting for social justice, and we continue our commitment to democratic and egalitarian values."

The conference this year was highly successful. There were a total of 530 registrations for the August 17-19 conference in St. Cloud - 342 were for the full conference, with 417 people attending Wednesday, 474 on Thursday, and 376 Friday, with 305 people attending the annual awards banquet Thursday night. There were 21 vendors, and 27 posters for the packed sessions. Thanks to the very hard working Summer Institute Committee and all who worked to create this conference!
