ELL Evening Adult Basic Education Teacher – South St. Paul Public Schools

Position Type: Teacher-Adult Basic Education/ABE Teacher

Effective immediately, the Human Resources Department will accept online applications for the position of Adult Basic Education Teacher.  The schedule includes an evening course Monday and Wednesday.

Benefits are prorated for 0.5 – 0.8 FTE amounts.
Salary Range: $44,929 – $102,918
Salary placement is based on education and experience as indicated in Teacher’s Collectively Bargained Agreement.

Job Summary
Adult Basic Education teachers work in classrooms delivering English as a Second Language, GED preparation and/or basic skills instruction to adult learners. Teachers must be knowledgeable of the needs and goals of learners from a wide range of ability levels.

Job Functions

  • Teach various academic subjects in multi-level classroom.
  • Prepare lesson plans/activities and teach varying levels of proficiency for ESL or ABE (reading, math, etc.).
  • Prepare and teach adult and/or adolescent students at varying levels of proficiency for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) testing.
  • Administer, interpret and incorporate Comprehensive Adult Standard Assessment System CASAS test results on a regular basis.
  • Assess adult learner skill levels and develop individual learning plan.
  • Deliver instruction in accordance with the Federal and State mandated (CCRS, TIF & Digital Literacy, College & Career Skills) curriculum outlines provided.
  • Post testing at appropriate intervals to assess progress.
  • Track and record students’ progress and level changes.
  • Correct/review students’ work and provide feedback to students.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by federal and state laws, district policies and administrative regulations.
  • Create a positive environment to ensure successful learning for all students.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to plan and schedule lesson promoting learning following approved curricula.
  • Adhere to all district policies and procedures.
  • Support district’s mission, vision and values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Current Minnesota Teaching License appropriate to teach in ABE program
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching adult learners
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills.
  • Strong mathematics, language arts and linguistics teaching skills.
  • Excellent technology skills.
  • Commitment to working effectively with culturally, economically and socially diverse students and families.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and confidentiality with students.
  • Demonstrated desire to maintain and improve professional competence by attending educational conferences, professional development and other learning opportunities
  • Demonstrate patience and a positive attitude towards adults in ABE programs.
  • Must understand the dynamics of multicultural diversity within the student population.
  • Demonstrate prompt, regular and reliable attendance.

Physical Requirements
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Vision abilities required include close vision.
