Job Title: Digital Literacy Instructor
Type: Non-Exempt
Hours: 15-20 hours per week (flexible with some remote work available)
Classes: Monday & Wednesday 1:30 – 4:30 pm at Horn Towers, Tuesday 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Sabathani Community Center (includes one hour of prep/clean up for each class)

Reports To: Executive Director
Salary: $21 – $24/hour

Organization Summary: Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) is a place-based nonprofit that strives to empower neighbors to assume leadership roles in their own community, while also striving to diversify that leadership to allow for a better mixing and sharing of ideas and cultures. We are a community led organization, established in 1992. Our main programs include 3 community garden sites, business facade revitalization grants, the LNA Education Program which provides high-quality in-person English language and digital literacy instruction, as well as several community engagement events and committees. Program Summary: The Lyndale Education Program serves adult students in the Lyndale and surrounding neighborhoods. The purpose of the program is to provide high-quality English language and Computer Basics instruction and to help students to become more connected to the community.

Position Summary: The Digital Literacy Instructor teaches afternoon adult English and Computer Basics classes at Horn Towers and morning Sabathani Community Center. The Digital Literacy instructor is also responsible for maintaining the technology for classes and for LNA’s organizational use.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Education Program Volunteers

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Instruction/Classroom Maintenance 75%

  • Teach the beginning level (CASAS 180-200) class and teach LNA’s Computer Basics course
  • Assist volunteer teachers as needed during class; oversee 1:1 tutors
  • Manage in-class new student registrations
  • Organize pre-set curriculum materials including print units for groups, maintain student binders, track unit progress, etc.
  • Coordinate classroom set up and materials for Horn Towers.

Volunteer Oversight 5%

  • Guide volunteers on how best to support students
  • Assist with the bi-annual volunteer training with other adult English teachers
  • Assist with volunteer communications and appreciation, as needed
  • Assist with annual volunteer survey, as needed

Administration and Data Entry 10%

  • Enter class attendance into MN ABE database tracking student attendance and progress
  • Register new students and administer CASAS pre- and post-assessments according to MN and federal guidelines; enter and maintain student and volunteer data in MN ABE database
  • Assist with new instructor onboarding, as needed
  • Manage partnerships with Horn Towers and Sabathani Community Center; organize materials/storage
  • Oversee maintenance of the English Learner Digital Essential Skills (ELDES) curriculum

Student Engagement, Outreach and Retention 5%

  • Assist with ongoing student recruitment efforts and course advertisement in collaboration with education and other LNA staff
  • Assist with distributing the annual student satisfaction survey
  • Ensure all students feel welcome and integrated within the classroom community LNA Staff Duties 5%
  • Attend LNA Education team meetings monthly
  • Attend monthly check-in meetings with ED and LNA staff meetings
  • Provide LNA Education update to LNA Board of Directors at least once annually
  • Assist with occasional LNA events and organizational work as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year experience teaching ELL/ESL required, preferably providing formal/informal instruction to adults with limited English proficiency
  • Comprehensive understanding of adult learning
  • Spanish or Somali language proficiency strongly preferred
  • Preferred education & training: TEFL/TESOL certification or Hamline’s Adult ELL Certificate; current MN teaching licensure with EL instructional training
  • Ability to relate effectively with people of other cultures and varying educational backgrounds; learners range in proficiency from emerging literacy to advanced, so experience with a range of levels a plus
  • Strong digital literacy and technology skills
  • Ability to respond effectively to individual and cultural needs as well as different learning styles
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with volunteers and/or supervising volunteers

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Ability to continuously sit, stand or walk.
  • Ability to bend, squat, push, pull and lift often.

Work Environment: The majority of work completed at LNA will be at LNA’s office, Horn Towers, or Sabathani Community Center in a classroom environment and include regular interactions with individuals receiving services, volunteers, donors and other community members. It is expected that each of these interactions is done with the highest levels of professionalism and confidentiality as required in the parameters of those relationships. These interactions may occur in person, on the phone, via e-mail or through the use of social media.

  • Will work outside of the office within the community in places such as the YMCA, apartment buildings, churches, schools, and community centers.
  • Will be required to interact with community members and may require small amounts of public speaking, being photographed for media use as well as appropriate use of social media as a marketing tool.
  • May include activities outside.
  • May occasionally walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • May climb ladders.
