Position Title: Adult Education Instructor and Site Coordinator
Reports to: PM Adult Education Program Supervisor
Status: Full-Time, non-exempt
Salary: $22.00-$24.00 per hour
Grade Level: Level 8
Location: In-Person at the Wellstone Center and at 1080 Montreal
Hours: 12 PM to 8 PM Monday-Thursday
Organization Overview: Neighborhood House believes that communities and neighborhoods thrive when families have the opportunity to build safe, stable, and rewarding lives. That is why, for 125 years, Neighborhood House has been working alongside families to ensure that they have access to food and housing for their basic needs and education opportunities to help them achieve their dreams and goals. Today, we serve more than 15,000 people through our integrated programs in six St. Paul neighborhoods.
Program Summary: Neighborhood House’s Adult Education program is well-respected throughout the Twin Cities and known for its robust class offerings, which range from literacy level to advanced English, citizenship, GED, college preparation, computer classes, and workforce training classes in collaboration with partner organizations. Our team of instructors are highly skilled and deeply committed to the program. Each year we engage more than 400 students in classes. Our students range in age from 17-90, represent 40 different countries, and speak more than 26 languages. Many of our students attend classes to learn or improve their English skills so they can improve their job opportunities; some of our students have a goal to become more involved with their children’s education; and some of our students are seniors who find English classes offer a community. In addition to our team of professional staff, our program receives ongoing support from a corps of dedicated volunteers. All of our programs are offered free of charge to our participants, eliminating financial barriers that would limit a student’s ability to participate in classes.

The Role and Expectations: The Adult Education Instructor plans and leads English Language Learning Classes, Digital Literacy Classes, GED Classes, and/or other career pathways courses as assigned. All courses require teaching a Digital Literacy component. Instructors are responsible for tracking student progress which includes testing and administrative tasks. Thirty minutes are offered per hour of instruction to accomplish: all lesson planning, digital literacy preparation and administrative duties (testing and data entry).
Accountabilities: Direct Service
- Plan and lead high-quality, engaging lessons for adult learners using Neighborhood House curriculum
- Teach classes 18-20 hours a week
- This may include up to 10 hours of online instruction
- Maintain class webpage and course management system (CMS) with class materials, such as Google Classroom or the Weebly Webpage
- Help set and monitor student goals
- Participate in on-going professional development related to goals and objectives of position
- Conduct new student registration and student recruitment
- Conduct CASAS Testing for learners
- Coordinate Adult Education volunteers at 1080 Montreal
- Support volunteer teachers at 1080 Montreal
Data and Evaluation
- Complete SID database, CASAS Steps training, ABE Foundations, and Northstar Foundations Training
- Collect and enter all required data in accordance with agency and funding requirements
- Proctor and score CASAS Steps tests and Northstar Digital Literacy Assessments; track student testing eligibility
- Track student attendance in the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) state database (SID)
- Enroll students and monitor their progress on distance learning programs including, but not limited to: Northstar Digital Literacy, Typing.com, ReadTheory, MobyMax, Vocabulary.com, and KhanAcademy
- Implement program evaluation tools and track progress using relevant database(s)
- Maintain confidentiality of program participants in accordance with data privacy laws, standards and policy
- Prepare or assist with preparation of program reports as instructed by funding agreements and supervisor
Communication
- Provide feedback on the class curriculum
- Participate in observation and feedback process
- Maintain professional communication with staff, volunteers, interns, participants, and partners
- Perform all work in accordance with Neighborhood House policies, procedures, and norms
- Attend and participate in departmental, agency and external meetings, trainings, committees and events as required
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 1-3 years of experience working with immigrants and refugees, preferably in Adult Basic Education, English Language Learning, or GED
- Curriculum development experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in English
- Proficiency in language(s) other than English preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse ethnic, economic, racial and cultural backgrounds
- Working knowledge of racial equity and social justice issues relevant to the communities we serve
- Working knowledge of immigrant/refugee trends and needs, self-sufficiency issues and community resources
- Strong time management skills with demonstrated ability to manage tasks, projects, and priorities
- Demonstrated ability to move projects to completion by deadlines
- Committed to working both independently and as part of a team
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and the Google Educator Suite
