Job Title: Somali Speaking Computer Basics Teacher
Type: Independent Contractor
Hours: 4 hours per week
Class Location: Hosmer Library (347 E 36th St Minneapolis, MN 55408)
Class Times: Class times are to be determined but will either run on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8 pm or 5-7:30pm or Thursdays between 12 pm-5 pm. Classes are in person only and will start in early January and run through May- possibly into early June.
Reports To: Executive Director
Salary: $25-30/hour, depending on experience

Organization Summary: Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) is a place-based nonprofit that strives to empower neighbors to assume leadership roles in their own community, while also striving to diversify that leadership to allow for a better mixing and sharing of ideas and cultures in the 10 x 6 block area. We are a community led organization, established in 1992 serving residents of the Lyndale neighborhood of South Minneapolis and surrounding communities through transforming our housing stock, initiating economic development, providing adult education, promoting the arts, creating a more sustainable environment, and most importantly building community.
Program Summary: The LNA Education Program serves adult students in the Lyndale and surrounding neighborhoods of South Minneapolis. The program provides high-quality in-person adult English language and Computer Basics instruction to help students become more connected to the community.
Position Summary: The Somali Speaking Computer Basics Teacher will lead a group of adult students at Hosmer Library through the English Learner Digital Essential Skills course computer basics curriculum.
Supervisory Responsibilities: May include classroom volunteer oversight
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Instruction / Classroom Maintenance
- Teach a group of LNA students, class sizes range depending on location but are usually 5-15 students, using provided lesson plans
- Supervise students as they sign in and out
- Manage set up and tear down of classrooms
- Manage in-class new student registrations
Position Qualifications:
- 1 year experience teaching adult students preferred, a teaching license is not required
- Proficient English speaking and reading skills
- Proficient Somali speaking skills, reading is a plus
- Ability to work with students in a large group
- Ability to respond effectively to individual and cultural needs as well as different learning styles
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient understanding of computers and digital tools
Training and orientation will be provided prior to the start of classes.
Training may include (based on skills and experience):
- 12 hours of online education instruction through Literacy Minnesota
- NorthStar Digital Test proctoring and will include an orientation to Minnesota’s Student Information Database (SiD)
Training will include:
- a tour of Hosmer Library
- a review of the ELDES curriculum
